It's one of those grass is greener things, right? You spend seven days a week feeding three, four or five characters all with different needs and moods and getting a chance to sit down by yourself and actually taste the food and take a few deep breaths and talking to the dog are pretty great. Feed yourself by yourself night after your night and dinners of pickles and cheese puffs (it's been known to happen!) seem like a pretty good idea.

I hear they have good fiddleheads up in Maine. Cook some up and let me know!

I agree--it IS hard to cook for one. My hubby was at a business dinner this week, but I managed to scrounge up a nice asparagus sandwich on a baguette. My doggie kept me company, so that was nice. And yes, sometimes one IS good :)

Your single niece in Maine balks at your statement about being single. It is an awful experience to cook for one -- but this sounds pretty good. And our farmer market is finally back in season!

[...] As I’ve mentioned before, in one of the more emotionally chaotic periods of my life I decided that Dining With Dignity is an important component of maintaining solo sanity and self-respect. Of course, I don’t have to eat alone now, because I’m feeding my girl Naomi half the week, when she’s not with her mom, and the boy is my steady date. But still. There’s something to be said for enjoying adult company at the end of the day, even if it’s just my own. And I want to make sure not to let the spring slip by unnoticed while I’m preoccupied with picking up the great mass of toys on the kitchen floor, the great mass of clothes on the girl’s floor, and the great mass of dog hair on every floor.
I had never thought of those little chocolate souffles as sexy, but now that I think about it, yeah, they are some sexy little desserts. I followed the recipe in Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diaries.

Karen, thanks for the nice note! Looking forward to the recommendation. I feel like the lack of a food French cook book is a real hole in my collection. I have an old Sunset "French Country Cooking" that I actually use with surprising frequency, and I figure someday when I retire I'll start working my way through Julia Child . . . but I'd like something fresh and workable for right now.

Re the buffalo mozarella at TJ's: It seems to go in an out. Usually just a small supply and it's sort of tucked in next to their house brands. This note from Forno Bravo (http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f33/trader-joes-2800.html) pretty much sums up my experience:

It isn't consistent, but Trader Joe's gets real Mozzarella di Bufala (Mandara brand) imported from Naples. It's a little pricey (but not too bad), but it's the real deal. The same logo you see in the Coop in Florence. If you get the chance, you should give it a try. The flavor is more tangy and texture is very soft, compared with domestic mozzarella. If you haven't had it before, go for it.

Got to go try those buffalo burgers. On a Big Bun maybe.

All this sounds and looks (and was) SOO good, I'm glad I'm fully recovered too, and looking forward to (hopefully) another weekend of excellent Spring treats... those mini souffles look VERY sexy and YUM!

The buffalo burgers at the farmer's market (I forget the farmer's name) are excellent too, and I think they will fit most buns.

Have to say though, nothing compares to watching Giussepe Caputo plunge his arms elbow deep into boiling water to pull out freshly-made Mozzerrela in Brooklyn! (read Anne's fun interview)

I am so happy to be introduced to your blog. HomelessDave told me about it and I love M & Y (formerly Big 10). Tommy is wonderful!

I have a French book to recommend and need to see if I can find it for you. It is fun reading and I think you will like it.
I'm not surprised that Matt's recommendation isn't what you were looking for. If I can find this book I'll e mail or come back and make a note.

Love your site!!
